Because of COVID-19, SXSW 2021 will be held virtually.
South by Southwest (aka SXSW or South By), is a multi-week conference and festival that celebrates interactive, film, and music industries. An essential destination for global professionals, the event features sessions, showcases, screenings, exhibitions, and a variety of networking opportunities. SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and people come together. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world attend the event in mid-March in Austin, Texas.
The SXSW 2021 Conference in March will occur online through SXSW Online.
A New Urgency and the Rebirth of Business
SXSW PanelPicker is the official platform that gives attendees a significant voice in conference programming. Proposed presentations, panels, and workshops must fall under one of themes for that year.
This year, Upside Avenue and other industry leaders and educators submitted a panel application and the topic falls under two of the five 2021 themes.
A New Urgency
2020 has amplified issues like racial injustice, poverty, nationalism, and the climate crisis amidst a global pandemic. The future depends on the business, non-profit, government, science, and technology communities all working together. What advancements are needed to create immediate and lasting progress?
The Rebirth of Business
From startups to small companies to major corporations, capitalism must be examined as we look to rebuild the global economy. A potential leveling of the playing field awaits if we seize this opportunity for more equitable systems across race, gender, and class.
About Our Panel
Traditionally, the commercial real estate industry is an industry you get into because you know someone. It is also not a very diverse industry in the U.S. (only 4.6% are Black*). This has created a self-perpetuating ecosystem that lacks diversity.
Our panel explores how we can disrupt that ecosystem by providing minority students with CRE education, experience, and opportunities to help level the playing field. It also addresses how impact investing can help create the programs and funding that generates this beneficial and measurable change without sacrificing investor returns.
